Telecom Directorate in RDSO is engaged in the task of development and standardisation of telecom equipments/systems for use on Indian Railways. This multifarious task involves the following activities:

- Design and development of modern Telecom equipment
- Standardisation of Telecom equipment and systems
- Adaptation & Absorption of emerging technologies
- Improving reliability of existing equipment
- Providing Technical guidance to Zonal Railways
- Investigating field problems referred by Railways/Railway Board
- Issuing installation and maintenance manuals & codes of practice
- Laying QA standards for equipment manufacturers & conducting quality audit
- Vendor development to ensure supply of quality material and equipment to Railways
- Testing and inspection of Telecom equipment
