2009-10:

(i)

Throughput enhancement

Laboratory measurement of Dynamic Shear Modulus of Fill Soils for use in Railway Track Formations with IIT/Kanpur

For measurement of dynamic shear modulus of compacted soil with the help of ‘Bender Element’ fitted inside proctor compaction mould.

To develop testing procedure for measurement of Dynamic Shear Modulus of soil.

Completed

(ii)

Safety

Soil Nailing for Stabilization of Steep Slopes near Railway Tracks with IIT/Kanpur

Reportcovers Geotechnical design of soil nailed slopes with back ground theory and design examples and construction methods for soil nailing in steep slopes.

For stabilizing the slopes of embankments and cuttings.

Completed in and

report circulated to Zonal Railways for implementation

(iii)

Safety

Guidelines For Application of Jute Geo-Textile In Railway Embankments  And Hill Slopes

The guideline covers application of Jute-Geo-Textile for erosion control of embankment and cutting slopes with the help of vegetation and jute-geo-textile.

It would help in slope stability, turfing etc. of railway embankment and at the same time it would be cheap & biodegradable.

This guideline has been approved by Railway Board and issued to Zonal Railways for implementation

(iv)

Efficiency

Guidelines For Geotechnical Engineering Organization in Zonal Railways

This guideline is upgraded version of “Guidelines for Geotechnical Engineering Organization on Zonal Railways” February 1987.

To issue Modified version of  existing guidelines due to recent developments in field and  lab testing equipments.

Approved by Railway Board and issued to Zonal Railways for implementation

(v)

Throughput enhancement

Guidelines and Specifications of Design of Formation For Heavy Axle Load

This Guideline includes specification of formation layers such as blanket, prepared subgrade, and embankment fill etc. along with thicknesses for heavy axle loads of 25, 30 & 32.5T.

Guidelines will  enableRailway Engineers  to achieve quality in execution of earthworks for heavier axle loads.

Approved by Railway Board andissued to Zonal Railways for implementation

4.0

2010-11:

(i)

Asset reliability

Basic Library Management System

To develop a software module in house for listing & searching of library  Books/Reports/

Codes

For easy access of literature available in GE Library.

Implemented in GE Library

(ii)

Throughput enhancement

Design of formation based on CBR value of sub-grade soil with IIT/Kanpur

To conduct CBR test for various available soils and develop design procedure to determine suitable blanket thickness and ballast depth for given traffic condition and on different types of sub grade soil.

To determine suitable thickness of blanket materials.

Completed in July 2010 and report circulated to Zonal Railways for implementation

(iii)

Miscellaneous

Reinforced Earth Design of Embankment and Cuts in Railways with IIT/Kanpur

Design procedure of reinforced earth embankments and

reinforced earth slopes for cutting

To study the behavior of reinforced embankment and cuttings.

Completed in January 2011 and report circulated to Zonal Railways for implementation

5.0

2011-12 :

(i)

Asset reliability

Software development for computerized laboratory Management System

Software has been developed for management of soil samples tested in GE laboratory.

This software is helpful in optimizing time frame of testing of soil sample as well as to check the status of testing of samples.

Partially Implemented

(ii)

Throughput enhancement

Consultancy for Instrumentation & Monitoring of construction of formation for Field Trial of Formation specifications of Heavy Axle Load” with   IIT/Delhi

To render consultancy report by doing FEM on the proposed cross sections and calculate stresses/ deformations in the formation.

This project is useful for Instrumentation and monitoring of construction of formation as per new specification for Heavy Axle Load

Project completed

Field trial is to be conducted.

(iii)

Economy

Project on Reinforced Earth Wall with its Design Procedure and Cost Comparison for Road Over Bridge with Conventional Slopes/ Retaining Walls and Road Over Bridge with Reinforced Earth Walls

The report covers the concept of RE Wall Design with solved examples for different heights of ROBs. A detailed comparison of cost with actual field data has also been done.

To compare cost of construction between ROB with RE wall and ROB with Conventional retaining wall.

Project Completed and report sent to Railway Board.

(iv)

Safety

Guidelines for Design & Construction of Tunnels

The guidelines cover the key components of a tunneling project including Geotechnical investigation, design philosophy and Construction methodology.

This guideline will enable Railway Engineers to develop a basic appreciation for complexity of tunneling project

Approved by Railway Board in and circulated to Zonal Railways for implementation

(v)

Safety

Guidelines for Civil Engineering Maintenance and Safety in existing Tunnels

The guideline covers inspection and maintenance of existing tunnels along with safety precautions to be followed in tunnels.

Guideline will be helpful in maintenance of tunnels.

Approved by Railway Board and circulated to Zonal Railways for implementation

(vi)

Safety

Guidelines for safety in Tunnels during Construction

The guideline covers various aspects of safety precautions for design, planning & construction of tunnel.

This guideline will help the Railways Engineers to understand the safety measures to be adopted at various stages of construction of tunnel

Approved by Railway Board and circulated to Zonal Railways for implementation

(vii)

Asset reliability

Project for Development of Small Width Vibratory Roller for compaction of earthwork in gauge conversion works and narrow width portion

To develop Small Width Vibratory Roller for compaction of earthwork in gauge conversion works and narrow width portion of embankment.
